I can't
afford to pay for Little League, can my child still play?
Absolutely Yes! Any child needing a scholarship gets one, no
questions asked. If you need a scholarship, simply note that on
your registration or contact the league.
Do I have
to volunteer? Truckee Little League is an all volunteer
operation and we ask that all families help out in one way or another if
at all possible. Our board members, umpires, managers and coaches
already donate a lot of time. Helping them in any capacity is
greatly appreciated. Ways to volunteer include: umpiring,
managing, coaching, being a team mom or scorekeeper, or helping out at
one of our events like opening or closing day.
I my child
too old to start playing Little League? It is never to late to
start your Little League career. We have players starting their
Little League career at all ages. One reason we have tryouts is to
place players in the right division based on their ability. And
secondly, most kids are able to quickly catch up to more experienced
Little Leaguers very quickly. Although you can play Little League
at five years old, at least half of all Little Leaguers started their
careers at an older age than five.
Tryouts? Do
I make the team? Everyone who signs up for Little League, plays
Little League. Our objective is to create equal teams and we use
tryouts to asses each player skill which managers use to draft their
teams and place players in the correct division. More tryout information...
Are
tryouts required? Tryouts are only required for players who
are looking to play in the major division who have not played to Truckee
Little League in the past. But, we would like all players aged
7-12 to attend at least one tryout. 5 year olds and first-year 6
year olds do not tryout. 6 year olds with a year of Tee Ball
experience may tryout if they would like to play up in the AA Farm
division.
What is Little
League Age? Your Little League age is your age on April 30th of
the current year.
What division
will I play in? Truckee Little League has five divisions:
Tee Ball, AA Farm, AAA Farm, Minors and Majors. Players aged 13-15 play in the
Truckee Babe Ruth system. The
divisions are aligned as follows:

How are
players assigned to teams? In the Tee Ball and AA Farm divisions, players
are assigned to teams by the division coordinator. In the AAA Farm,
Minor, and Major divisions, players are selected in a draft for each
division by the managers of each team after tryouts. Players should be contacted
within a couple of days after the draft by the manager of the team.
Our goal in all divisions is to place players in their most appropriate
division and to create equally skilled teams.
What are
the rules of each division? Please see the
Truckee Little League Divisions page
or the Truckee Little League Bylaws page..
Why is
Farm dividing into two divisions? For years, Truckee Little
League has debated having player pitching (like the Minor Division) in
Farm. The advantages of having player pitching in Farm include
giving pitchers some experience and giving hitters the experience of
hitting a thrown pitch, avoiding a bad pitch while the pitches are still
fairly slow, and learning to swing at strikes and not to swing at balls.
The disadvantage of player pitching is that it tends to slow down the
game, and baseball is already slow enough.
We have split
the division into two: AA Farm and AAA Farm. AA Farm will
have coach and machine pitching and will allow 6 year olds who have had
enough of Tee Ball to play up.
AAA Farm will
begin with machine pitching for the first half of the season. For
the second half, each game will begin with two innings of player
pitching, then back to machine pitch for the rest of the game.
There will also be rules in place that make sure only qualified pitchers
are able to pitch and that if the pitching is slowing the game too much,
the game will revert back to machine pitch.
I would like to
manage a team. How do I sign up? The Truckee Little League
board of directors appoints managers. Please contact the league
ASAP if you would like to manager a team. We do not appoint
coaches to help you. You can either team up with a coach ahead of
time, or ask for coaches from your team after it is drafted.
I would like to
coach a team. How do I sign up? Truckee Little League does
not appoint coaches. To coach a team, you may team up with a
manager, or wait until your child is assigned to a team
and offer your services as a coach.
What is
the difference between a manager and a coach? The manager of a
team will be ultimately responsible for the team. He/She will
draft the team, organize the practices, organize team volunteers
(coaches, team mom, scorekeeper, etc.), coach the team, and will be the
primary contact between the league and the team. A coach typically
helps coach the team and performs any other duties as assigned by the
manager.
I'd like
to help the league by managing a team, but I'm not sure if I have the
skills. How can the league help me manage a team? First
of all, managing a team is probably easier than you think. We will
be having coaching clinics and meetings that will help you teach the
skills, organize practices, and run the games. Additionally, if
you'd like, we'll send experienced coaches/managers to your first few
practices and/or games to help you get started and get the feel of how
to run things. Please don't let the fear of the unknown persuade
you not to coach or manage. Little League is as much about having
fun and teaching life skills as it is about teaching baseball.
If you're
worried about your schedule, most all coaches and managers miss a few
games and/or practices. Each team usually has 2-3 coaches, thus if
one is missing on occasion, it shouldn't be a problem. Obviously,
we'd like our coaches and managers there for most of the games and
practices and they need to be reliable. But again, please don't
let the fact that you'll miss a couple of games dissuade you from
managing a team.
What kind
of equipment/uniform do I need? Little League will supply to
all players a jersey and a hat for them to keep. Major division
players will also receive pants. All players will need a baseball
glove. If unable to afford one, contact the league and we'll get
one for you. Optional items include baseball pants and cleats.
Additional, all male participants will need to wear an athletic
supporter at all practices and games.
How often
are practices and games? There is usually one practice or game
during the week and one practice or game on Saturday for each team.
Tee Ball and Farm teams will have about 12 games, Minors will have about
14, and Majors will have 16.
How can I
get ready for the season now? Although everyone has their own
thoughts, here are a few of mine: The first thing to do is to get
a little physical exercise. Secondly, play catch. The last
thing you want to do is to throw a ball for the first time of the year
at tryouts. Third, take some swings with a bat, whether it be just
out in the yard without a ball, or at a batting cage. There are
batting cages in Reno and we will open our own cages up sometime soon.
Do I play in
Truckee Little League or North Tahoe Little League? In general,
it's where you go to school. Based on your residency, if you go to
a Truckee school, you would play for Truckee Little League.
Residents of Truckee, Donner Summit, and Northstar play in Truckee.
Residents of North Lake Tahoe, Alpine Meadows, and Squaw Valley play for
North Tahoe Little League.
